One of the more controversial issues within the churches of Christ has been that of the role of women in the assembly. The Skiatook Church of Christ has recently concluded an intensive study of that topic, and we've added the class materials to this page for your study as well.
In addition, we suggest you read the views expressed in the links below as they provide more insight into the issue. However, that does not mean that we agree with everything in them. Just that they cause you to think about it in ways different than what you might have heretofore.

Homework for 2/18
1 Corinthians 14:34 - The women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says.
Questions:
Questions:
- Where in the Law does it say women should be silent or that women must be in submission?
- Why would Paul appeal to the Law, which he is not under (1 Cor. 9:20), as a reason women are not allowed to speak and must be in submission? Are women still under the Law when it comes to public assemblies?
- In 1 Corinthians 9:19-23 Paul states that he is not under law, but at times lives as one under law, so as to win those under law. Is it possible that this is the principle Paul is teaching in chapter 14 in regards to men and women in the assembly?

Homework: Re-read 1 Corinthians 14, and especially 34 & 35 which say: "The women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says. If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church."
And then ponder:
And then ponder:
- If an unmarried woman desires to learn, what is she supposed to do?
- If a woman is to keep silent, not permitted to speak, even shameful to speak in church, why did Paul grant permission for them to continue praying and prophesying in 1 Corinthians 11?

Homework for next week is to read 1 Corinthians 11:1-16 and then consider these things:
- Paul is responding to actions taking place within the church in Corinth.
- Customs are discussed and there is no consensus over what custom.
- Women were praying and prophesying in public.
- The only time the word authority is discussed is verse 10.
- We cannot neglect to connect v.11 with the preceding discussion.
- This passage is greatly debated regarding correct translation and meaning of numerous words.
